How can Europe strengthen its role as a coordinated and internationally connected innovation ecosystem in transport research and mobility?
This question will be addressed during Special Session 26 at the TRA Conference 2026, bringing together representatives from industry, research and policy to discuss future pathways for international cooperation in transport innovation.
Moderated by Oliver Lah, the session features contributions from Verena Wagenhofer (AVL), Mats Rosenqvist (Volvo Group), Flavio Grazian (UITP), Jean Luc Di Paola Galloni (Valeo), and Stefan Werland (Wuppertal Institute, representing GIANTS).
Under the overarching TRA 2026 theme “ReGeneration in Transport”, the first part of the session will focus on international collaboration for urban mobility transitions. Discussions will examine how European initiatives and programmes including Global Gateway, NDICI Global Europe, and Horizon Europe can contribute to stronger cooperation with partners in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Particular attention will be given to aligning innovation, climate action, and development cooperation within a common framework for the period 2026 to 2030.
The second part of the session will address the opportunities and challenges of international cooperation in a changing geopolitical landscape. Topics will include transatlantic collaboration in AI driven mobility, automated transport systems, digital infrastructure, and low carbon transport solutions. The discussion will further explore how Europe can balance openness and strategic autonomy while developing resilient long term cooperation models.
